Microneedling… better than botox?

Would you like to regenerate your face and give a boost in time for a busy and festive summer show? Move away, botox!

Microneedling is the latest trend that will guarantee your glow back! BELLA talks with Ana Wiggil, owner of Anaclinical about everything you want to know about microneedling.

What is microneedling?

It’s an innovative, non-intrusive method used to get a youthful, radiant face and treatment involves the application of a dermal pen across your face and neck to make the small needles of checked holes in the skin.

Are you one of those people who hate needles? Do not worry! The treatment is still for you! The needles used are only between 0.5 and 2.5 mm in length. The needles are also disposable and a set of new needles is used on each customer. These small needles can even be used in the delicate eye area to help regenerate the skin.

Why is microneedling so popular?

Microneedling has become a sought after procedure for many aesthetic practitioners, especially in South Africa where residents of the country already lost a large amount of their collagen matrix at the age of 18, due to frequent and sustained exposure to harmful sun rays. Microneedling with a dermal pen provides a safe way to rebuild that damaged layer of skin and clinical studies have proven to be even more effective than laser and chemical peels.

Microneedling is especially effective in treating the following:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck and decollete
  • Acne and other lesions, including surgical lesions and stretch marks
  • Pigmentation
  • Hair loss
  • Facial lifting
  • Enlarged pores

Are there any side effects?

Microneedling has almost no side effects, expect for some redness or irritation in the treated areas, which is a natural reaction to the small holes made by the small needles. Do not forget your sunscreen after the procedure! Especially during the regeneration process after treatment ends. The frequency of microneedling treatments depends on how deeply the needle has been with the previous treatment. Ana suggests that moderate microneedling treatments are performed every two to four weeks, but deeper treatments should only be done every four to six weeks.

According to Ana, microneedling must be avoided only if there is a skin infection or disease and during pregnancy and must be performed very carefully if the client has a history of fever leaves. After a cosmetic procedure such as dermal fillers, clients are advised to wait two weeks before making any microneedling treatment appointments.

“For everyone else, you will see a definite improvement in your skin within a few days,” says Ana.

There are minimal complications and microneedling encourages a high level of absorption of active ingredients and the dermis layer of the skin is successfully thickened without removing or damaging the epidermis. It’s a win-win situation!
